My last-minute contribution to the general ambience of Hallowe'en Night comes in the form of this comp I put together of spooky sound effects & music that have been slowed downed, pitched down, put in reverse, edited and/or laced with effects for a creepier vibe than usual. It's something that anybody with the most basic knowledge and equipment could've done but probably wouldn't've bothered to do, but I bothered because I've always been fascinated with what can happen when you play a recording backwards or at the "wrong" speed, and so you don't have to. As for the cover, once again I must thank Karswell for providing me with the perfect image for the project and once again he knows nothing about it yet. Scare the li'l ones good with this one. I hope everyone has a Happy Hallowe'en and maybe I'll be back one dark & stormy night. 'Til then...

Too bad it has to be World Famous Creatures #1, a rip-off of Famous Monsters Of Filmland #1. You've always been curious to see inside this mag though, haven't you? It's pretty neat-o to look at, but to read it's a laff-a-minute. Put together by people who either didn't know or (most likely) didn't care, it's a riot of misinformation. Of course, if you had bought this fresh off the newstand when when you were little, little would you have cared...

In 1971 my family moved to a new subdivision, so new that our house was the last house on the block and there were only five houses. It was around this time I saw all the classic Universal monster films on the Channel 39 8:00 Monday(!)Night Movie. I also saw a 16mm print of Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein in the most incongruous situation, at the Meadows Community Center on a sunny Saturday afternoon with the sounds of screaming kids playing in the pool outside competing with Lou Costello's screaming inside. So for the sake of nostalgia, here's a(rather crappy-looking)A&CMF filmbook from Horror Monsters #7, followed by more childhood reveries...

The first copy of this I ordered from Captain Company came broken in two, so I had to wait 12-16 weeks total to get this record! You only have to wait a few minutes! This record actually scared me a little bit at the time...

I confess, I am guilty of a mild deception. On Monday, October 19th, 2009 I posted the cover for the late 60s Soma label version of the most familiar to the most people(with the probable exception of Chilling, Thrilling Sounds Of The-)haunted house record, Sounds To Make You Shiver. However, the sound share I shared was actually the 70s Pickwick re-issue. I just pasted the cover I liked best(both came from the webnet)at the top of the post, never dreaming there could also be a sonic difference between the two releases. Well, though slight, there is. On Side One, at least. Since I acquired this earlier version of STMYS early in the year, I now know this. All images are my own...this time. Have Fun spotting the differences!

The Cast Of Eerie Publications Perform The Johnson Smith Novelty Company "Horror Record"!

Never, ever, ever would I have thought that I would see such a sight- a video of moving images from Eerie Publications covers set to the soundtrack of- the Johnson Smith Horror Record! As Jason Willis of the Scar Stuff of Legend put it, it was definitely aimed at a "specific" audience, which happens to be me and all of you out there who care about what I post on Magic Carpet Burn. Jason originally posted it on the Scar Stuff site, go there to read about how he did it. I would just like to say how excited I was to hear from Jason, as his site literally rocked my world even before I had a computer that could download stuff, as it is also a treasure trove of information and his posts got more comments than I thought it was possible to get from such a "specific" audience. (Fortunately my good friend Aaron was able to download stuff from Scar Stuff for me and supply me with hard copies, which in turn got put on my mp3 player and have been there ever since.) The point is, lots of people have fond memories of their exposure to these records and have their favorites. The Johnson Smith Horror Record is one of mine, but I would never imagined such a rich tableau of images from listening to it as what you're about to see. As a listening experience the JSHR is a baffling exercise in "What the heck is goin' on here?" and the video has many surprises and joys for those of us who have actually memorized the hellish thing. I particularly love the point in the video where...well, I won't spoil it! I would also like to say that I now have a lot more respect for Krishtar and his threats of world destruction, "Because, you have only one hour to exist!", so watch this video now! Just for fun I am posting my own copy of the Horror Record(both sides)and also my copy of the Gayle House Haunting record, with the sincere hope that Jason will one day tackle that one too!...

Frightful Frankenstein Friday Freak-Out! - Craig Yoe's Dick Briefer's Frankenstein Collection

Oh (My Lack Of) God, I was under the impression that The Fantastic Freaky Frankenstein Feast was going to start Friday night at midnight, not Thursday night at midnight. I was checking my email before beddy-bye and while I was at it dropped by the blog to discover- everyone else had already posted their FFFFFFFFFFFFF posts! This was at 12:45 a.m. Texas time! So here I am trying to gather up my marbles to be able to tell you, with genuine sincerity how great Craig Yoe's newest book is, I'm just going to show you this Frankenstein story first, it's from Prize #7 and is not featured in the book. I'll talk about the book and stuff at the end of the post...

I'm so unprepared! Dick Briefer's work on both the serious Frankenstein and the funny one(my favorite)is a wonder to behold, there's a reason why it's called the Golden Age. All I can say is that Craig's book is BEE-YOO-TEE-FUL to look at, a must have(if you hurry you can get it before Halloween!)and here's a lot of other places you can go to read about it, with reviews written by talented people who know what they are talking about and featuring Frankenstein stories not seen in the book...and they can tell you where to buy it, too!-

Son Of Frankenstein Filmbook - Conclusion

Sorry I got so emotional in Part One, I get so defensive at times! Seeing this movie on TV in the late sixties, at the age of eight, I vividly remember the opening scene with Son & Wife on the train heading for the town named Frankenstein. It's a dark and stormy night, and as the train is pulling into the station, the conductor calls out the name of the town, and through the window of their train car I saw a dark figure and assumed it to be the Monster himself! It was only a tree, but I've always wondered if that was supposed to be an intentional scare or not...

Son Of Frankenstein Filmbook, Part One

When I was flipping through Famous Monsters #52 during my Dark Shadows series of posts I ran across this great filmbook for Son Of Frankenstein, a film that is often on my mind and one which I plan to watch this season(I don't watch them every year- I don't want to burn out on them. Why I'm worried about this after having seen Teenagers From Outer Space and Monster Zero more times than I can count is silly, there's just something about Universal Horror and Halloween... ). One thing that really bugs me about this movie is the way it's always compared unfavorably to the first two James Whale-directed Frankenstein films. I'm not going to go on a long tirade about how ridiculous I think this practice is, I'm just going to show you these amazing stills so you can remember the film and wonder why anyone wouldn't think this film is incredibly entertaining and features some outstanding perfomances and certainly stands proud next to the first two, I don't care who directed it and whether Karloff is wearing a sheepskin vest or not. I love this movie and I don't love anything unless it's worthy of it. RARRRRRRRRRR!!!...

On Monday, November 10th, 2008 I posted the cover of my first copy of Monster Parade #4, a magazine that just mysteriously disappeared from my collection. I can't for the life of me determine what happened to it. Anyway, I said that if I were ever to find it or find another copy, I would post some of the contents. Well, I lucked out and found another copy for eight bucks. On the 100 Most Valuable Magazines list, it is ranked #51 and a NM copy is worth(?)over a thousand dollars. Well, now that they have released every damn episode of Dark Shadows on dvd and I have a Netflix account, I've finally summoned up the courage to face the daunting task of watching every damn episode(yeah, right!). It's one way to spend time in October. I could never watch the show when it originally aired, because the music scared me so much I turned the TV off as soon as it came on, believe it or don't! I now make volume one of that music available to you, see bottom of post. The next three volumes will appear over the next three days as we spend some time with the weirdest soap opera ever...

So weird, I just got through watching a mash-up of Meteor Man Zone and War In Space on Internet Archive (here) and went to do a little more research on Ryo Ikebe online, only to find out that he died today! He was in Battle In Outer Space, Gorath and lots and lots of great yakuza films and military dramas as well...

Thanx for saving the Earth for us, Ikebe-san, three times!

Monster Rally In Living Stereo - Hans Conried & Alice Pearce

Oops, well I didn't mean to skip October 1st without starting my Official Halloween Countdown(such as it is)but I did, go tell Hans about it! This is a remarkably clean version of Monster Rally from my own collection, an LP that's been shared umpteen-bazillion times already but now you can hear it with the faint whisper of my fingerprints on it. Four songs with Hans Conried(I love Hans but, eh...), four with "The Creatures"(who were probably used to backing whatever TV star was making a vanity record that week)and four with Alice Pearce, who sings two of the most frightening songs from my childhood, "Close The Door", about an overwhelming invasion of...(?), and "The Thing", which is no less than a tale of a demon riding your back to Hell and beyond. Listen to "The Invisible Man" and you tell me the woman in the lyric isn't completely insane and imagining imaginary boyfriends. This is a deeply disturbing record that should only be listened to for "Mostly Ghostly" and "The Dracula Trot", but you're not afraid, are you...?

One of my heroes writing about one of my other heroes? It happened in this issue of The Monster Times, in the only sympathetic(no conflict of interest here, buddy!)article in an otherwise all-bashing-of-low-budget-wonders all-out attack. It was hip to do so at the time, and even a mag as liberal-minded as TMT indulged itself...

This is as good a time as any to spring this little surprise on you, a rare copy of a 45 released to publicize The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living And Became Mixed-Up Zombies. I don't know what the A-side has to do with TISCWSLABMUZ but the B-side will strike a chord with those persons familiar with Ray's most famous film...

Here's a great bio for John Zacherley AKA "The Cool Ghoul", King Of Horror Hosts from a Chiller Theatre Special Edition magazine published waaay back in '98 when Zach was only 80! I have never had the privilege(or the moolah)to attend a ChillerCon but I bet it's amazing, just having a chance to meet Zacherley would be reason enough to go. Some might think it strange for a Southern boy like me, who was born too late and too far away to experience Zach in his media prime to have such a fascination with the guy. It started for me when I saw a pic in a book of early television history that my folks owned featuring Zach holding a bloodstained card that said "Be Neat"! This was before I ever saw an issue of Famous Monsters. A video he produced in the 80's, "Horrible Horror" was my first look at him in action and finally a video compilation of kinetoscopes from '58-'59 that appeared this decade only confirmed my suspicion that this guy was the Coolest and the Ghoulest! I finally found my own copy of his "Scary Tales" LP and will be sharing it with ya'll tomorrow along with my copy of his "Eighty-Two Tombstones/Lunch With Mother Goose" 45. 'Til then, get acquainted(or re-acquainted)with John Zacherley!...

I was watching I Was A Teenage Movie Maker the other day and there was a bit where some guy whose name I didn't recognize and don't remember said something about SPFX guys in general and Paul Blaisdell in particular not "revealing their secrets"- well, I just had to laugh, I saw the photograph...just to set the record straight, Blaisdell & Co. were all about telling you how they did what they did in order to inspire young'uns to go out and create their own creations, as this continuing series of articles shows...

In an attempt to get the pumpkins rolling, I've come up with a new header(obviously)and re-installed the Monster Record Player I feature every year around this time, equipped with new tunes, many of the koolest of which I got from Blues From The Redboy and The Devil's Music, two great music sites that can be found in my Blog Archive. Thanx also to Karswell of The Horrors Of It All for supplying me with the graphic for the New Improved MRP notice in the sidebar. I don't have tons of stuff to share this year, mostly reposts of scary records I put up last year but with a difference- the files will all be from my own lps, lps which I managed to accumulate this year before the bottom dropped out of the family wallet. So, if you needed noisier copies of all your favorites, well, here they come! There will be at least a couple of InterWeb firsts and probably some monster magazine stuff I've been too lazy to post so far(scanning is hard!), not to mention the Dell Mad Monster Party comic in it's entirety(Rarrrr! scanning bad!)so stay tuned. The above image is the "cover" I made of a compilation of sound efx and music I made a few years ago and update every year, maybe i'll post that too. I made it as an exercise in Halloween ambience, a journey through the darkest night of the year & the soul. This year might be the darkest of all for all of us, at least 'til next year. Oh yeah, i'll probably be going on & on like this more often, too...(Boo!)

If Les Paul played the accordian and Mary Ford had done topless modeling...Here's my own, personal copy of Kay Martin and Her Bodyguards, sounding better than previously offered elsewhere for downloadin'. I can't recommend this lp enough! "The Heel", "Swamp Girl" and "Baby, Did You Hear" will blow yer mind and she does a great version of "Summertime" too, it's all good, the cotton is high,

oh my, so am I!...

For more info on Kay, well, there's not much out there. Songs from one album tend to show up on another. Besides the Christmas record I've grabbed files for three other records but two had the same songs on them and one was only half-new. I've seen six album covers in all. I've seen the Live at Las Vegas lp with two different covers but I suspect the contents are the same. There is at least one 45 floating around out there too...

Of course everyone knows that Peter Fernandez voiced Speed Racer in it's American release, but he and his cohorts (Corinne Orr, Jack Grimes and Earl Hammond) also did an awesome job dubbing Ultraman, a show I could not have survived the early 70s without, and still watch on a regular basis. Thanx, Peter, Jack & Earl, who have all passed away...
